This is a matched pair of the best and deepest color topaz that I have ever seen. The color of this pair is
quite remarkable. Topaz is a Type I stone which means that one expects it to have few inclusions. For this stone type, VSS means that any inclusions would be minute and difficult to see using a 10X magnifier. They would be invisible to the unaided eye. This is the highest grade that the GIA allows for any gemstone. I would call the color of this pair a deep reddish-orange. The colors and cuts appear identical to the eye. Best I have ever seen! This is a lovely and attractive matched pair. It may be used for a pair of rings or possibly the best pair of topaz earrings one would find in a lifetime of trying. Precious Imperial topaz is usually fairly light in color. These are NOT light. These were a surprise to several viewers who had expected something lighter. |
Topaz are silicates of aluminum with fluorine and hydroxyl. A general formula for topaz is:
Al3(SiO4)(OH,F)2. There are colorless, yellow, pink,
and blue topaz. Good colored yellow and pink are considered the most valuable. The colorless is usually known as
"silver" topaz and has been used as a less expensive substitute for diamonds. The hardness of topaz is
8 and the density 3.54 (values for diamond are 10 and 3.52, respectively).
Most of the blue topaz are produced by irradiation of
colorless topaz. While this is accepted in the industry, we do not consider this a fully natural process. Recently
there has been a quantity of natural blue topaz in lighter colors available from Nairobi.
Topaz is a gemstone that can have a problem due to what is called "perfect cleavage" along a plane at
90 degrees to the sides of the original crystal. If topaz is cut at the wrong angle relative to the plane or has
rough handling along this plane, it can cleave (split) in such a perfect fashion that it looks almost like it was
cut with a knife. If the gemstone was cut correctly originally this should never be a problem. Rings are a piece
of jewelry that always gets the roughest handling and some additional care should be taken with large topaz rings.
The most valuable of topaz are those of golden and pinkish colors. The most valuable of these is called "Imperial Topaz" which is one of the most valuable of the gemstones after the "precious" stones.

The rarest of topaz is named the "Imperial Topaz" with bright golden colors. These colors range
into great golden, apricot, and peach colors. In some of the most valuable examples of this variety, the color
can become almost as vivid as fire opals.
Because of a very good buy from one of our suppliers, we are able to offer several exceptional examples of these
at about at a price that can be considered below normal wholesale. These are among the most valuable of gemstones
outside of the range of stones called "precious" gemstones. For this variety, examples above 1 carat
are scarce and above 2 carats very scarce. The term "precious" gemstone is overworked. Flawless imperial
topaz is much more rare than flawed rubies and emeralds that sell for a much higher price.
This nice pear-shaped
Imperial Topaz is well cut (although possibly a tiny bit thin) and has an attractive peach golden color. It appears
bright and flawless to my eyes. Even using the 10X magnifier, no flaws of any type were visible to me. This gemstone
would make a lovely ring or pendant.

Price: $35.00.

This gemstone is a bright
mid golden color. No flaws of any kind were visible to me even using the 10X magnifier. The cut is possibly a little
thin. This gemstone is excellent in quality and would make a great jewelry item.
Code: TOP247
Price: Only $35.00.
Imperial Topaz has a range
of colors possible. This one is a vivid gold with a hint of pink. The photo shows it more pink than it should.
This stone is very bright and flawless to my eyes. It would also be flawless using the 10X magnifier except that
there are several facets that could have been better polished. The fine color makes this gemstone.
Code: TOP256
Price: $38.00.

Most blue topaz are produced by irradiation of colorless or nearly colorless topaz. The following topaz are
fully described, but there is no way I can determine if these are "natural" or irradiated. The prices
would be the same for each in any case. These are listed here in by shape and then in order of size. Do not let
the price fool you. We are passing along a great price that we got from our supplier for buying a large order.
Included in this list are several cushion cut examples which is an uncommon cut for topaz. A cushion cut is like
a rounded rectangle. This cut is a combination of an oval and a rectangle cut gemstone. Normally the extra facets
make this much more brilliant than an emerald-cut would be.
All of these round topaz
are exceptionally bright and flawless to my eyes. They are well cut and attractive. A detailed description of each
gemstone is given below. Any of these would make great rings or pendants with a lot of sparkle and flash.
TOP187 - 6.4 mm diameter - 1.12 Carats - Using a 10X magnifier, I was able to see a couple of tiny inclusions that
looked like lighter colored dots. This is a nice gemstone and is a light to medium sky-blue.
Price: $6.00.
|
This group of blue oval topaz has three different shades of blue. Color 1 on left is a mid sky-blue, color 2 in the center is a slightly lighter sky-blue, and color 3 on the right has a strong greenish tone. It is almost more green than blue. Please remember that topaz has two refractive index levels and color can vary on each axis. |

This blue topaz is a strong medium sky-blue with a touch of green (color 3). This stone looks excellent at first glance, but there is a minor chip on one facet. |

This bright blue topaz is the slightly dark color 1 in the above photo. It is especially nice with only a few inclusions visible with some difficulty with the 10X magnifier. |

All of these pear-shaped are flawless to my eyes and very bright. Pear-shaped stones are noted for their brilliance
and make exceptional pendants and very good rings.
|
|
Pear-shaped gemstones are among my favorite shapes. These are usually very brilliant and show a lot of flash.
The pear cut is not easy to make, but is considered one of the standards. These are all very beautiful gemstones. All of the gemstones in this list are flawless to my eyes and exceptionally bright. The 11 carat one below did reveal a couple of problems to my eyes when the I looked at the reflected light from just the right angle. These problems were only visible from the back and would not be visible when the stone is mounted. |

Silver topaz is colorless or a very light blue. This is a "natural" topaz color. These make bright and attractive jewelry pieces.
