Smoky Quartz, like amethyst and citrine, is a form of crystalline quartz that is silicon dioxide
- SiO2. The color of smoky quartz can be any shade of gray or brown.
Shades of light yellow-brown or yellow-grey are usually listed as citrines and are somewhat more valuable as such.
Almost any other shade of smoky quartz has about the same value as long as it is crisp and not too light or so
dark that it is opaque. Because of the fairly low price of smoky quartz, it is possible to purchase quite large
and impressive gemstones in this class. This is one of the gemstones I personally like a lot.
Smoky quartz has a hardness of 7 and a density of 2.65 (values for diamond are 10 and 3.52, respectively). This
gemstone is sometimes called "smoky topaz" which is not a correct name.
