About Our Limited Warranty

The |OWL+GEM| limited warranty is fairly simple:
1) If you believe that the description of the gemstone which we made was not correct, notify us by E-Mail or phone within 3 days from the date you receive the gemstone for an exchange or full refund except for shipping. We believe that mistakes in description are very rare but might happen. After we examine the gemstone, we will in addition give you full refund of shipping costs in both directions if we find the description was incorrect. We expect you to be honest with us and tell us in what way you believe the description was wrong. A short statement is all that is required.

2) All mountings are custom ordered and custom set. Because of this, we cannot make full refunds on the mountings themselves. If you wish to return a mounted gemstone, we will reset the mounting with another stone you do like. We will pay shipping cost on the completed jewelry.

Please check under the heading "About Us and Our Descriptions" below for a discussion of how we describe gemstones.

About Us and Our Gemstone Descriptions

We believe that the descriptions of the gemstones we sell are accurate. When we say a gemstone is "flawless to the eye", we are saying that a normal person will not be able to see any flaws with the naked eye. Unless the descriptions says otherwise, all of our gemstones are of this quality. This is also known of as "eye clean". When the description says that I "cannot see any flaws under a 10X magnifier", I mean it. It is always possible that a more sharply visioned person than me might be able to find some minor flaw that I could not. Any such flaw would at least be very difficult to see even under magnification. This description will include gemstones that are flawless and maybe a few that are "very, very slightly included" to "very slightly included".

It may seem like we repeat ourselves when we list a series of gemstones with descriptions that all are "flawless to the eye and flawless to me under 10X magnifier", but we are in a position to pick the gemstones before they are offered for sale. We try to pick the best available within a reasonable price range.

Gemstones which have minor imperfections that I are able to see under magnification are described with some detail. This has cost us some sales because most dealers would describe these gemstones as "essentially perfect" or "virtually flawless". Sales are less important to us than honesty. But everyone may make a mistake which is why we have a warranty. Please remember that all gemstones that we sell are products of both nature and the gemsmith. Neither nature nor humans are perfect in what they produce.

To the best of our knowledge, all gemstones that we sell are natural and not man-made. Some gemstones normally have enhancements which are accepted in the industry as natural. These are described on our WebPage. Essentially all "Blue" topaz has been made from colorless (silver) topaz by radiation. While this is accepted by the industry, we do not consider this natural. Because of the demand on the part of many of our customers, we now will sell blue topaz to those who understand their origin.

We have been in a totally unrelated business for more than 15 years. During that time we have learned that quality and support are the most important factors in keeping customers. Gemstones have been (and still mostly are) a hobby to me for more than 35 years, but we intend to keep what we have learned in business to get and keep friends and customers among gem lovers.

Pictures with Gemstone Descriptions

With many of the gemstones we describe, we have pictures. These are usually low resolution photos so you do not have to wait for long periods of time to get the image on the screen. It is not possible to make a perfect picture of any real object. Gemstones are especially difficult to photograph. We try to make the picture agree with our impression of the gemstone color and depth of color as much as is possible. With faceted gemstones, the lighting is normally from the back or the side. In most cases the picture is less attractive than the actual gemstone. The picture is magnified to see details, but the size of the actual gemstone and its weight are always given.

Gemstone Pricing

We try to give prices that are a good value to the buyer. Our pricing is well below normal retail. We buy at wholesale and resell to make a reasonable profit. In no field is price more dependent on quality than in the field of gemstones. All dealers have some idea of what they think their stock is worth. If a dealer thinks his or her product is worth less, it usually is.

There are a number of factors that influence the price of a gemstone. Click for a simple Discussion of These Factors.
