Cabochon Gemstones

Many gemstones that are opaque or nearly so are cut en cabochon. This cut has no facets but is a domed, polished stone that is normally flat on the bottom. While facet cut gemstones are designed to pass light through the stone, cabochon gemstones are designed to reflect light back to the viewer. Translucent cabochons may pass back a sheen, a star, a cat's eye, or an impression of clouds of various colors. Opaque gemstones should show vivid, interesting colors.

This miscellaneous section will include a number of gemstones that we currently do not have in sufficient numbers to merit making a new section. Gemstone types from this section will be split off when sufficient numbers of new gemstones are added. Because there are so many gemstones listed here, send us E-Mail if you have questions about the properties of any type.

These gemstones have a great high gloss polish on the black base and a very well formed and centered four pointed star. Most of what is called "The Black Star of India" is diopside, a form of calcium magnesium silicate. This enstantite star is a form of magnesium silicate that appears to be much scacer in today's market. These are attractive and interesting star gemstones. We are expecting more of these stars shortly.

Kyanite is a very unusal and very difficult to work gemstone material. It is not only brittle, it has a duel hardness. It is a fibrous material. The hardness along the fiber grain is 4.5 and across the fiber is 7.5!
The color of this gemstone is a blue with a trace of greenish, but most the color is in fibers which alternate blue and clear making these cabs tranlucent. The silky fibers present in these cabs gives them a sheen like a weak cat's eye. To top off the unusual nature of this gemstones, it has a very bright red fluorescence in short wave UV light.
