Description of Citrine

Citrine is a yellow-gold to reddish-gold colored quartz that is silicon dioxide - SiO2. The reddish-gold colors are considered the most valuable. It has a hardness of 7 and a density of 2.65 (values for diamond are 10 and 3.52, respectively).

There are several major color varieties of citrine. The best know is a gold tone. This ranges from a light to deep shade. A certain portion of citrines, especially that which is the more valuable reddish-gold, is produced by heat treatment of amethyst. The reddish variety is called "Maderia Citrine". Many other citrines have been produced by heat treatment of smoky quartz. This is considered a natural process in the industry and cannot be detected. It is highly probable that all citrines you see have been subjected to some form of heat treatment. In addition the greenish-yellow variety (sometimes almost a lime green) is produced by radiation and heat treatment of lighter varieties of citrine.

Exceptional Citrines

Very Large Modified Cushion-cut Square
Deep-Golden Citrine - Fancy-cut
12 mm X 12 mm - 5.65 Carats

This citrine is modified cushion-cut square with two straight sides. It is exceptionally bright and attractive. This gemstone appeared flawless to my eyes. Using a 10X magnifier, I was not able to clearly see any flaws of any kind. Some of the time I thought I saw something hidden in one of the facets at the edge of visibility with the magnifier. It also could have been a facet shadow. A couple of the facets might have been slightly better polished, but this is just being picky. A lovely gemstone with an unusual fancy cut. The stone is more golden than the photo shows.
Code CIT257
Price: $34.00. THIS GEMSTONE HAS BEEN SOLD!

We have just received a series of citrines that are exceptionally bright and a nice deeper golden color. There are pear-shaped, hearts, and a number of FANTASTIC trillions.

Mid Honey-Gold Cushion-Cut Citrine
8 mm X 6 mm - .97, 1.01, 1.26, 1.36, 1.38, and 1.46 Carats

CitrineThe colors are very good and are a mid (or a little lighter) honey-gold. The following citrines are all bright and flawless to the eye. A cushion-cut is like emerald-cut with rounded sides. Because of the extra facets required in these cuts, the color and luster are intensified. In the following list, those listed as Excellent are flawless to me using the 10X magnifier, and those listed as Very Good have a couple of very tiny inclusions visible only with the magnifier. If you need a matched pair, please let me know. There are three well matched pairs in the group. You may deduct 10% if you want a matched pair.

Large Honey-Gold Oval Citrines
9 mm X 7 mm - 1.49 and 1.55 Carats

Oval CitrineThese citrines are a medium honey gold. All are quite bright and appear flawless to my eyes. Using a 10X magnifier, I was able to see a couple of tiny inclusions. The CIT163 has the least inclusions of the pair. Both of these are bright and flashy and would make great rings or a pair of earrings. These citrines make a great matched pair.
CIT162 - 1.49 Carats - Price: $5.00.
CIT163 - 1.55 Carats - Price: $6.25.
Matched Pair Price: $10.00.

Large Mid Honey-Gold Marquise-Cut Citrine
12 mm X 6 mm - 1.53 and 1.63 Carats

Round CitrineThe colors of both of these citrines are good and are a mid (or a little lighter) honey-gold.
These gemstones appear flawless and flashy to the eye except for possible zones that are mentioned with the full description below.

CIT173 - 1.53 carats - There are several zones of darker colored citrine running around this gemstone. These are just visible to the eye, but make the color look darker then it otherwise would. Using a 10X magnifier, there were no other problems or inclusions visible in this gemstone. This is quite a flashy and high luster gemstone.
Price: $13.00.

CIT174 - 1.63 carats - This is an excellent citrine with no zones or other problems visible to my eyes. Even using a 10X magnifier, this gemstone is essentially flawless. There were two very tiny darker spots (natural inclusions) that were just visible in this gemstone. This gemstone has a nice luster and overall appearance.
Price: $18.00.

Large Mid Honey-Gold Oval Citrine
9 mm X 7 mm - 1.49 and 1.55 Carats

The colors of these gemstones are a mid honey-gold. Both of these citrines are all bright and flawless to the eye. Using a 10X magnifier, a couple of very tiny spots (natural inclusions) were visible but were quite difficult to see. This pair is an excellent match in color and cut. On the higher weight gemstone, there is a very minor spot on the top that was visible to me after I first saw it through the magnifier.
Code CIT162-3
Price: $11.00 and $10.00

Large Bright Diamond-cut (Round) Yellow-gold Citrine
10 mm Diameter - 2.85 Carats

This citrine is a bright and attractive gemstone. The color is somewhat lighter than mid gold. This gemstone appears flawless to my eyes. Using the 10X magnifier, I was able to see a couple of very tiny inclusions. I would place this gemstone in a large ring with no accent stones. This would be a very interesting ring.

Price: $16.00

Series of Brilliant Pear-shaped Deeper Golden Citrines

This series of golden citrines are an exceptional color and quality. All are at least "eye-clean" and are very brilliant.

Pear-shaped gemstones are usually very bright. They make excellent pendants in all sizes and great rings in the smaller sizes. These are usually mounted with the point upwards as a droplet form.

This is a nice ring or small pendant sized pear-shaped gemstone. It appears flawless to me using my 10X magnifier.

The following citrines were cut from a new citrine offering from Brazil. This variety of citrine has a great greenish tint added to the normal yellow or golden citrine. These would make great examples for a collector especially at these prices. As with most citrines, these have been heat treated in some manner. The greenish color may also be enhanced with radiation.
