Amethyst is purple colored quartz (silicon dioxide) - SiO2. The deeper purple colors are much more valuable than lighter colors. Of these my personal favorite are
those cut from Zambian rough. There also is a small premium placed on the variety that is called Rose De France
that have a delicate pinkish purple color. Amethyst has a hardness of 7 and a density of 2.65 (values for diamond
are 10 and 3.52, respectively).
Citrine is another quartz variety that is golden in color. When this is present in the same stome with an amethyst,
the gemstone is called an ametrine.

We usually list a few really special amethysts at the top of the page. All other amethysts are listed
by the basic shapes in the order of heart-shaped, marquise, oval, pears, rectangle (including emerald-cut), round,
and triangle. These are followed by some unique fancy cuts, cabochons, and ametrines. Several modern, checkerboard
cuts are listed with their basic shapes of round and oval.

This heart-shaped round amethyst
is a mid or very slightly lighter-purple. The heart is un-notched, and this cut might also be considered a wide
pear-shape. It appeared bright and flawless to my eyes at first glance. After locating a minor chip on the point
of the heart with the magnifier, I was able to see it with my unaided eyes. Using a 10X magnifier, there are a
number of light inclusions visible and the point of the heart is chipped. The overall effect of this gemstone is
still acceptable.

These amethysts appear
flawless to the naked eye. Using a 10X magnifier, I still was not able to see any flaws in any of these amethysts.
These amethysts are very well cut in the United States from Zambian rough. Zambian amethyst is a deep-purple color
with an attractive red-magenta flash. These are exceptional. There are 4 available in 2 sizes.

A very bright gemstones
that appears flawless to my eyes. Even using a 10X magnifier only a couple of near microscopic dots were visible.
The table of this checkerboard cut is not flat but is cut into s series of small squares. These catch and return
the light from the base of the stone giving a lot of extra sparkle and flash. This stone would make an excellent
ring or small pendant.

This pear-shaped round amethyst
is a mid or very slightly lighter-purple. While this gemstone is bright, there is a minor inclusion that is just

This amethyst appears very
bright and flawless to my eyes. The color is a nice mid or slightly darker purple. Using a 10X magnifier, I was
able to see a number of lighter inclusions. The brightness and overall visual appearance of this gemstone make
up for any problems under the magnifier.

Price: $9.00.

Please Note: The color of these cabs is a DEEP purple with reddish purple flash. The color is possibly best shown by the cab in the center. This photo was processed to show the reddish highlights. All three are this color. Gemstones cut as cabochons will normally have more inclusions than gemstones that are faceted. The amethyst chosen for these gemstone could have been used for faceted gemstones. While there are slight inclusions deep inside, these are well hidden by the deep color and bright flash. A high visual impact! Excellent! |

| AMT115 - 21 mm X 12.8 mm - 19.97 carats. I have had various descriptions of the basic shape of this piece. I
would call it kind of a flame design carved at the top and a globe at the bottom. The flame top has most of the
purple and is carved with a series of spiral lines and links. The globe portion has most of the gold as well as
a spiral series of checkerboard-cut diamond shaped facets. There also is some blend of colors between these areas.
You also might call the basic shape a pineapple if that has good vibes with you. Price: $44.00. |
